Australia’s profile in Compound international archery rested squarely on the
shoulders of former World Champion and World Record Holder Clint Freeman
during the past decade. Highly regarded and respected in the elite ranks,
Clint’s impeccable demeanour and competitive drive made him a popular
Aussie archery ambassador. While Clint has chosen to restrict his national and
international programme these past couple of years, a new and equally talented
performer has emerged in the form of burly South Australian Pat Coghlan.
His National Championship tally in target, field and indoor is now
considerable, and he stamped his mark on the world scene in 2008 with bronze
medal success in the most competitive International area, the FITA World Cup,
attaining a high world ranking in the process.
Now in his early 30s, this solidly well-built archer enjoyed success in a
number of sports before an unfortunate injury precluded him from major
contact endeavours and led him to the local archery range. He reached a
high level of performance in just a matter of months, culminating in state and
national title success in 2006 and an ever-increasing international profile in
the ensuing years. A resident of Victor Harbour in South Australia, Pat shoots
left-handed, with a 30.5” draw on his 59.6lb Hoyt Vantage.
He employs a BCY 452X string, with Halo .019 serving and selects Easton
X10 Pro shafts with 110-grain points and Beiter In-Out symmetrical nocks,
fletched with 187 Flex Fletch vanes.
On the field course, Pat shoots Easton ACEs, 400s with 100-grain points,
pin nocks and Flex Fletch 187s.
Indoors, he uses Easton Eclipse X7s, 2315s with G nocks, 125-grain points
and Easton 4” vanes.
His sight of choice is a Sure Loc 6x Black Eagle, his stabilisation a 41”
Soma long rod and two 12” Soma side bars. His release is Carter Target 3.
Now a sponsored pro staff archer with Hoyt and Easton, he has commenced
his own archery business, Pat’s Archery, which has grown strongly nationwide.
Again the national target, field and indoor champion in 2009, he has also
joined the prestigious 1400 FITA club.
Now firmly established in the supreme upper echelon of world archery, this
Aussie seems certain to add considerably to that status in 2010.
